143. Elevator Action Returns (Taito, Arcade (PS2), 1994)

Elevator Action Returns is the sequel to Taito's 1983 arcade title Elevator Action. Elevator Action Returns uses the same basic tactical shooting mechanics as the original, while greatly expanding upon the groundwork laid by its predecessor. Gameplay follows the original formula of progressing through a building using elevators, taking out enemies, and going in every red door before escaping. After the first stage, which is a linear skyscraper that you slowly descend, the stage types expand to cover a variety of layouts, not just tall buildings, but long stretches with only a few of the titular elevators, and everything in between.

In addition to more interesting levels, you can also select from one of three characters each with different stats and weapons. Controls have also been overhauled, as you can double tap to dash (one of my favorite things to do in a 2D game), fire at an upwards angle, and pick up new weapons. There are also blue doors that you can enter, which give you a fun little item roulette. As was the original, Elevator Action Returns is a slow action game. Turning around takes time, and you have a fixed jump length (and a pretty weighty jump), but it all feels very good. You can attack enemies at close range for bonus points as well, which feels great.

Overall, the gameplay feels decently fair, though it is very easy to get overwhelmed by enemies. I had a good half hour playing through the game, but I can't help but assume that Elevator Action Returns is a much better time when played co-op, as having 2 characters gives you so much more coverage, especially considering how long it takes to turn around.

4/5, a great arcade action game, but I'm glad I didn't spend $300 on the Sega Saturn version
