142. Space Invaders DX (Taito, Arcade (PS2), 1994)

The previous Space Invaders title I played, game #133 Majestic Twelve, was an interesting spin on the formula that made the original 1978 arcade title a classic. Space Invaders DX, on the other hand, is more of just a look back. The game has three main modes:
  1. Space Invaders Mode: This mode is like a museum of 4 different arcade versions of the original Space Invaders game: the monochrome game in both upright and tabletop versions, the color version, and an intermediate version that was colored with strips of cellophane. I never knew about this cellophane version and it was a cool bit of trivia, though I think the full color version is the definitive one.
  2. Versus Mode: This is a 2-player simultaneous versus mode where you are playing a scaled-down version of Space Invaders with 20 aliens and one shield. Certain enemies will change colors, and hitting them when they are certain colors will change their direction or influence the other player's aliens. It's an interesting mode, but also pretty shallow.
  3. Parody Mode: This mode just replaces the original graphics with sprites form other Taito arcade games, but it is just a visual update, nothing has changed on the gameplay side, unfortunately.
4/5, a neat little museum / tribute to Space Invaders
