113. Sanrio Carnival (Scitron & Art, Famicom, 1990)

After playing game #111 Sanrio Cup, I've decided to play all of the Sanrio games that I have unplayed in my collection, which consist of 7 Famicom Games and a Super Famicom title. I've decided to play the games in their release order, so the very first was Sanrio Carnival.

This is a basic Columns / Puyo Puyo-lite kind of puzzle game, where you are lining up the faces of Sanrio characters into lines of 3 or more, including diagonals. The game is broken up into 4 modes:
  1. Training mode: This mode has much larger character faces and a much smaller playfield as a result. It was a bit too easy, and I just gave up after lining clearing 100 lines.
  2. High score mode: This is the basic normal mode of the game, with a larger playfield but much smaller player sprites. It was still pretty easy, as there are only 5 characters, so there wasn't enough to really junk up the stage with before I was able to clear it. I also gave up on this mode after clearing 100 lines.
  3. Stage Clear mode: This is the only really fun / interesting mode, as it is a series of stages with different objectives. So on one level you might be trying to get 8 doubles (clearing 2 groups of different colors at the same time) and then on the next, you may be tasked with clearing 5 blakcs in a row 6 times. These stages played with the rules of the game in clever ways, and were actually decently challenging, compared to the brainless modes that preceded it.
  4. 2 player mode: I didn't play this one, but it's always nice to have a 2 player mode in any puzzle game.
3/5, a basic puzzle game with an interesting mission mode
