108. RoboCop (Sakata SAS, Famicom, 1989)

RoboCop is the home console port of an arcade game released the prior year by Data East. The game loosely follows the plot of the 1987 film that it is based on: you control RoboCop himself as he cleans up the streets of future Detroit. Here that translates into a pretty rote action game. Somewhat notable is the fact that you can't jump, so this is not a platformer. It feels like a much worse Castlevania; there are event he same kind of stairs, but here they are a huge pain to even walk up and down.

Your 2 action buttons are reserved for punching and shooting, and you can find a small variety of guns that you can switch between by pausing. Nothing about the game is super interesting or exciting. The action feels ok to bad, even by 1989 standards, and the starting infinite ammo pistol is just as useful as most of the guns you pick up.

One thing that sets RoboCop apart from its contemporaries is that there is a radar that will beep and blink to let you know there is a nearby wall that can be smashed, usually to provide a shortcut. While not particularly fun mechanically, I did enjoy the idea of RoboCop constantly looking for walls to burst through. The game is a tad on the difficult side, though generally if you plan your run through a level, there are enough powerups and shortcuts to make it to the end.

3/5, a pretty average Famicom game that would have been better of using the Kool-Aid license
